Six-Pack 2007 deadline looms...

sixpack.jpgHeavens, nearly forgot: the final submission date for The Six Pack 2007 is March 7, so if you've been dithering or have managed to forget about it you still have a whole week to churn something out. Wonders have been done in less time, and with excellent results, so go for it!

This year NZ Book Month will take place from 2nd–30th September and once again The Six Pack will be published – an anthology of six new pieces of NZ writing which will be distributed, sold and promoted widely throughout New Zealand to celebrate the Month. You could win five grand, see your writing published, and gain instant notoriety, if you like that sort of thing.

Entry forms and criteria containing all the details are downloadable here.

Hi Kathy,
IS there any information about the past Six-Pack(s), of what type of wrting the editors like? Is this quite conventional story telling and big names? Just curious, in case someone can advise. I can't get the book where I am.Thanks much, Louise Wareham Leonard

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you Louise, and by now, in fact, it's probably academic - but contrary to some public opinion (you know who you are) it's not big names and there isn't anything particular the judges are looking for, just an excellent standard of writing. Last year the winners ranged from a sixteen-year-old unpublished schoolgirl to Brian Turner. The judging is totally blind - no-one knows who they're reading (except if it's Brian, presumably). Really and truly, anyone can enter and if their writing is great, they're in with a chance for a damned good prize. Anyway, as I said, unless you're poised to sprint to the post office with your finished epistle right now, it's all over – I just hope your is already in, Mrs Wareham Leonard! Here's where you'll find more info about The Six Pack 2006 though:

Does anyone know who's judging the comp this year? There doesn't seem to be any information about the judges on the site for the 2007 comp (although the comments from last year's judges etc are included). I nervously sent six chapters of a novel off by fast post on monday but it's such a lottery really. Good luck to everyone who entered.

They're working on the judges list at the moment Tania. In the short term they'll be collating and processing all the entries – the NZ Book Month website will keep you up to date if you want to pop in there from time to time (http://www.nzbookmonth.co.nz). We'll be putting up a list of judges soon. And around May the shortlist will go up for the People's Vote. Good on you for entering - and good luck!

Thanks Kathy!

So, no judges' names yet again?
Not encouraging Kathy-
nor does it bode well for yet again a truly open, honest contest.

O, just by the way, how much is being charged per entry this year?
Cheers, n/n Islander
