The press photographers were out in force at the Auckland launch of NZ Book Month today, and a good-sized crowd watched as Linda Vagana, Peta Mathias and Maggie Barry stepped up to the mic and did the celebrity duties. These three, along with the likes of Shayne Carter, Tame Iti and other media-friendly types, have also contributed to Book Month's new website section 'Kiwi Favourites', naming their top three NZ books.
The event also saw the launch of The Six Pack, an anthology of new writing. 170 submissions were finally narrowed down to the late Kingi McKinnon, Brian Turner, Briar Grace-Smith, journalist Philippa Swan, Henry Feltham, and 15-year-old high school student Phoebe Wright.
The rain, which had been threatening all morning, stayed away. Several publishing types were spotted in the Aotea Square audience, including Random House managing director Michael Moynahan and New Holland's Belinda Cooke.
Other launch events happened in Wellington and Christchurch - any readers happen to go to those?

Damn, forgot. Will the bookshelf stay on Parliament steps I wonder so I can mosey along tomorrow? The six-pack is certainly a good cross-section of people, it is so perfect it almost looks rigged. I am delighted Briar Grace-Smith is one of the six -- she got my vote. I love that story of hers. How sad about Kingi McKinnon, and absolutely amazing about the 15-year-old!
