Don't mess with Judy and Rosalie

Show and TellSometimes the really interesting stuff is that which happens away from the bright lights and big cities. And so it is with Show and Tell, a show being toured around Northland by a dynamic duo of a certain age.

The one-hour programme is compiled by Dr Judy Reinken (of Omapere) and Rosalie Carey (of Whangarei). It profiles the work of Northland writers including Daphne de Jong, Lindsay Charman Love, Bill Parkes, Bunty Howarth and Peter Land.

Rosalie and Judy are no longer young, but they travel in a truck rather than a Honda Civic. And they’ve already rumbled through Coopers Beach, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Dargaville and Whangarei.

Yes, they sound like interesting types. Judy actually trained as a biostatistician before beginning a lifetime of biblical scholarship, and spent years studying West Semitic languages. She settled in the North, farming kunikuni, weaving harakeke and kiekie, and lately, writing novels. Now she serves as a kaikarakia (lay preacher) for the Pihopatanga o te Tai Tokerau.

Show and tellRosalie is a published writer of plays, books and poetry, for both children and adults. She's also a practicing teacher of Oral Communication and Drama, a fundraiser and a professional actress.

As well as guest appearances in Close to Home and Mercy Peakk, there have been, very recently, roles in short films and the Urbis 24 Hour Deadline Theatre. Her latest book (due for publication this year) is a prequel-sequel to A Theatre in the House – The Carey’s Globe, which tells her story as co-founder of the Globe Theatre in Dunedin.

You can catch Judy and Rosalie at Warkworth Library on 23 September, with the following gig being – wait for it - a rest home in Tauranga.

For more information, give Dr Judy a yell on (09) 405 758, or email ffms@paradise.net.nz. Rosalie's on (09) 438 8913 and rosalie.carey@paradise.co.nz.

Rock 'n' roll.
