A new C K Stead novel will be released in October. It's called My Name Was Judas and it's published by Random House. According to the publisher,
... Stead goes beyond the boundaries of the story known to us all and convincingly enters the mind of one of its key players. This bold novel, with its wonderfully clear narrative prose, is fresh, provocative and compelling.
The keen young things at the Corban Estate Arts Centre have persuaded Karl to talk about his latest meisterwerk on Monday 4 September, at 7pm.
Unfortunately, there is a slight misprint on the invitation.
Don't let it put you off.

I really like C.K. Stead
He knew Frank and Janet
Wonder why he uses initials?
He's smart, probably planned it.
When he was young did he look at Baxter
and think 'Damn I love that K'?
Did he add the C after that?
Recently he had a small stroke.
Made me think of loss
the planet
and Frank
and Janet.
He swims every day
towards the volcano
I think he's a pretty good egg
that old C.K. Stead.

I’ve had said a gruff
old egg although
a jolly good read
but after “Mansfield”
I had to concede
he has a way with
words and then,
when I heard him speak
almost caught a smile
I decided that this
gruff old egg
is… worthwhile
and re the misprint
on the invitation
it occurs to me there
is an explanation
the typist has a lisp?

Um, I think James K was same generation as Christian Karl Stead (which, as Terry Sturn once said, was how you knew the difference between people who knew ANZ writers and people who didnt...) but otherwise, I love correspondents bursting into verse!

Have you discussed about Günter Grass? He is quite a news story, isn't he.

Oh whoops Walter, this thread is about C.K. Stead, but yes, I must confess, we did hear Gunter was in the SS!
