Doris de Pont’s new premises will be opened this evening with the entire collection that she launched in Wellington to great acclaim in March. Doris’s designs are probably better known as DNA; she used to be round the back of the Verona, off K’Rd. Why am I telling you about a fashion event? Because Gregory O’Brien will be there, as it’s his poetry that is plastered tastefully all over Ms de Pont’s utterly fabulous clothes The event tonight will kick off at 5.30pm and run ‘til 7, at number 2 Williamson Ave just off Ponsonby Rd (where SofaSpot used to be) with Greg talking at about 6.15pm. Should be fabulous.
More on Greg: make sure you're parked in front of the telly this Sunday to watch a collaborative film project that dates back to 1949, and involved photographer and cinematographer Brian Brake, aged 24, poet James K. Baxter, aged 22, composer Douglas Lilburn-aged 34, and the 18-year-old artist John Drawbridge. They all got together and climbed Mt Aspiring down in Wanaka, with Brian Brake filming it, after he had ‘twisted a few arms at the National Film Unit’. Baxter wrote his famous Poem In The Matukituki Valley (pictured, with the Mountain in the background) on this trip and hoped to write a script in verse for the film. But the footage was mislaid apparently and has only recently been found. Over half a century later, Gregory has stepped in and scripted the documentary that tells the story of the extraordinary expedition. It screens on Sunday 4 June at 10.30pm in the new Artsville slot on TV1.
And if you just can’t get enough of Greg, there’s a great podcast of him talking about a couple of new poetry releases on National Radio with Kim Hill: David Eggleton’s Fast Talker (Auckland University Press, $21.99) and One Shapely Thing by Dinah Hawken (Victoria University Press). It’s here. Happy O’Briening.
