Booksellers New Zealand has figured out the star performers from 2005, and once again, it’s been an amazing year for Jenny Pattrick (right). The Denniston Rose has appeared on 22 of the 25 fortnightly bestseller lists, and Heart of Coal on 16.
Keri Hulme’s The Bone People and Patricia Grace’s Tu are close behind, with 14 appearances each, with fifth place going back to Pattrick for Catching The Current.
In the non-fiction category, the Edmonds Cookery Book and Michael King’s History share top spot with 24 appearances each, followed by Craig Potton’s New Zealand Aotearoa and The best of Annabel Langbein.
Kids and teenagers have been digging The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-time, with nine appearances each.
And on the international front, it’s been The Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown) and A Short History of Nearly Everything (Bill Bryson) all the way. The staying power of these books has been extraordinary: they’ve both been on the lists since mid-2003 and each has spent half the last year in the #1 spot. Time for a change, we think, but there's no inkling of where the next international publishing phenomenon is coming from.
