Get in line

cashregister.jpgWell, I’ve been laid low by more flu complications. It’s a nasty bugger, no doubt about it. My own fault for going into full flu denial so as to indulge myself at the Writers and Readers Festival – can it be two whole weeks ago?

Anyway, a bit of overdue housekeeping is in order, with no less than three items for the award-watchers among you. The BNZ is calling for submissions for the BNZ Katherine Mansfield Awards. They’ve sponsored these awards (won in the past by such luminaries at Frank S, Keri H, and Vincent O’S) for over 40 years, and I must say, I didn’t know that Katherine’s dad (Sir Harold Beauchamp) was the first Chairman of the BNZ, and remained so for 17 years. Fancy that.

Anyway, Marilyn Duckworth, Joy Cowley and Norman Bilbrough are judging this year. The Premier Award (judged by Marilyn) gets ya $10K, the Young Writer’s (for secondary school students aged 13 to 18 – judged by Joy) gets $1500 for the kid and $1500 for the school. And the Novice Award (Norman) carries a $1500 tag also; it’s for previously unpublished writers.

Entries close on June 30, be quick. Go to the BNZ site for details.

The big fat $65K Prize in Modern Letters is also calling for nominations, but these ones can only be entered by the author or the publisher. A good one to keep an eye on though for up and coming writers. The lovely Catherine Chidgey won the inaugural prize in 2002; Glenn Colquhoun in 2004. Nominations close 29 July 2005, shortlist announced October 14, winner announced March 2006. Check the IIML website for further details.

Finally, in this riveting round-up, Copyright Licensing Ltd (CLL) are looking to hand over two awards of $35K to give a helping hand to some lucky non-fiction writers' project. Previous recipients include Sarah Quigley and Paul Millar for their biographies of Charles Brasch and Bill Pearson respectively. This year CLL are hoping to attract writers interested in sciences, business, Maori and Pacific studies, the arts ‘and beyond’. Submit details of your project planned or underway by 5pm on Friday 15 July. Details at the CLL website.

Promise we'll have something more fascinating tomorrow.

Couldn't access the IIML site offered as a link for one of these awards. What's the direct www. address?

Sorry Rach - dodgy link there. It's now corrected. The full address is http://www.vuw.ac.nz/modernletters.

With the short story genre in mind...isn't it great to see Owen Marshall's latest "Watch of Gryphons" at No.1 on the Best Seller List. Just goes to show what a discerning reading public we are.

Also, I want to promote Sue McCauley's "Life on Earth" (short stories) published in 2003 - they are superb and before I was given the book, I hadn't heard much about it.

Aren't we so lucky, to have such world class writers and I know we flock to hear the international writers, but the truth is that in the short story genre, we are right up there!!!
