Chocolate fish

Cathy KellyThis week, on Wednesday night, The Chocolate Fish Sessions have Cathy Kelly, who has obviously been way too busy with her schedule to update her website since 2003 for god’s sake.

The author of seven novels to date, all of which were number one in Ireland, she’s the dewy young answer to such floral-frock chick-lit faves as Maeve Binchy and Rosamund Pilcher. Never read anything like that in my life of course, except when my mum insists (‘No really, the historical angle is really interesting’) and/or I’m stranded at a bach with simply nothing to read in my stylish leatherette weekender.

Of course I’d much rather call on Iris Murdoch for my ‘lite’ reading, but … well … in the two situations named above, I have to say, it’s like diving into a giant ice-cream sundae. Sweet, creamy and satisfying, but you feel a bit sick and vaguely guilty afterwards. A couple of chapters of some bracing Nabokov or perhaps The Penguin History of New Zealand would be the antidote, much like having a piece of Vogel’s toast and vegemite after icecream overload.

Anyway, Ms Kelly has a major fanbase, and is here to promote her new book, Always and Forever. If you don’t want anyone to see you enjoying such fluff, you can always pop a bag over your head, or grow a quick goatee.
