We’re surprised no one has thought of it before. Books To Check Out is a lovely, spiral-bound blank journal with 128 pages, and a sturdy cover inspired by those lovely old-fashioned library cards with date stamps.
Inside, there are sections for keeping track of books you want to read, noting down favourite passages from books you have read, and listing books that you’ve lent to people. And for those who set store by published reviews, there’s even a handy pocket at the back for clippings.
It’s published by the good folks at Chronicle in the US, but you can obtain a copy in New Zealand for $24.95 here. It’s not cheap, but it is rather cute.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered one of these books from Real Groovy. It was delivered within a couple of days and is, indeed, an excellent idea. The execution leaves a little to be desired, though: For example, there isn't enough space in the 'Books to check out' section to write in the name of the person who recommended the book to you (a vital caveat for later, I find...). And there is a lack of space also in the 'Favourite Books/Passages' section - no field for the author's name. The journal has a firm cover, though, that folds right back to ease note-taking, thanks to the spiral binding, and the epigrams are a pleasant bonus.
