The 2004 Whitbread Book Award winners have just been announced. The five successful books now in the running for the Whitbread Book of the Year are:
- Novel Award: Small Island by Andrea Levy (pictured)
- First Novel Award: Eve Green by Susan Fletcher
- Biography Award: My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots by John Guy
- Poetry Award: Corpus Michael by Symmons Roberts
- Children’s Book Award: Not the End of the World by Geraldine McCaughrean
Levy is now the favourite to win the £25,000 overall prize, after beating Booker winner Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty. The winners, each of whom will receive £5,000, were selected from 450 entries.

Having read Small Island, I am not surprised that it won as I thorougly enjoyed the book despite it being another in a (seemingly) long line of British immigrant fiction.
