Last chance bestsellers

Night BeforeBlimey, is it bestsellers time again? The weeks fair fly by at this time of year. Well, here they are, fiction first, the New Zealand top performers for the last two weeks as at December 10:

At number one is Tu by Patricia Grace (Penguin Books), steady from last time; number two is Eating With The Angels by Sarah-Kate Lynch (Black Swan), again steady; number three is The Denniston Rose by Jenny Pattrick (Black Swan) – her other book has dropped off though I see. At number four is The Bone People by Keri Hulme (Picador), up from number 5, and at back in the charts at number five is The Whale Rider (Movie Tie-In Edition) by Witi Ihimaera (Reed Publishing) having fallen off briefly.

And non-fiction: at number one, no surprises, is The Penguin History of New Zealand by Michael King (Penguin Books), number two is Sir Peter Blake: An Amazing Life by Alan Sefton (Viking), up from three; a sudden chartclimber at number three is Furry Logic by Jane Seabrook (Hodder Moa Beckett), up from nine. At number four is Tears In The Wind: The Lance O'Sullivan Story by Dianne Howarth (HarperCollins), steady at number four, and the number five spot is held by Stephen Fleming: Balance Of Power by Richard Boock (Hodder Moa Beckett) which has dropped from number two in the last period.

Now for children and teens: A Kiwi Night Before Christmas by Yvonne Morrison & Deborah Hinde (Scholastic) is at number one, up from three – that glorious cover must have something to do with it; Lauren Child’s Clarice Bean Spells Trouble (Orchard Books) is steady at number two, and Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack by Lynley Dodd (Mallinson Rendel) – an oldie but a goodie, has dropped in from nowhere at number three. Cow Power Kim Riley & Deb Hinde (Random House New Zealand), which was at number one, is hanging in there at number four, and The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time by Mark Haddon (Definitions) is back in the top five up from number eight. A good one for the Crimbo stocko.

So sharpen up your elbows and scamper off for that last minute shopping. Done all mine; smug as.
