Big shout out for sisters doin’ it for themselves goes to Julie Bickley of Literary Landscapes. Her little literary business is going from strength to strength and is making money and garnering books for schools while doing so.
To spend an evening basking in the reflected glory of a literary star, then browsing amongst dozens of books while relaxing with a glass of wine, certainly appeals to a lot of us. That's what you can expect at one of Julie’s Novel Nights event where you can buy books at a discount, and also contribute to a sales commission that goes to the school.
Julie, an ex-librarian, founded Literary Landscapes a year ago, and now has six successful Novel Nights events delivered Auckland wide, raising thousands of dollars for schools in cash, and hundreds of books for the school’s library. The concept was launched at Victoria Avenue School in October 2003.
‘I'm passionate about books and reading and wanted to share that enthusiasm with others. Novel Nights grew out of an event for book clubbers, who were looking for a night out to break the routine of regular meetings’ says Julie.
Get a headstart on Christmas shopping and hear the latest book news and reviews from Doris Mousdale, book buyer for Real Groovy and highly regarded book reviewer currently heard on Newstalk ZB. She'll be MC at the following two events. Real Groovy are very supportive of Novel Nights as well, and are donating some fab prizes as well as bits and pieces for the goodie bags.
So here are the two upcoming events: Kohimarama School, on Wednesday 20th October, 7.30pm – featuring multi award winning NZ author, and local resident Tessa Duder. Tickets $10.00 (includes glass of wine) contact Debbie Swiatek on 09–521 5115.
Then there’s Glendowie College, on Tuesday 2nd November, 7.30pm featuring the dynamic presence of Paul Jeffreys (previously an exec with M&C Saatchi), who is presenting his new book Fat Man Cooks, following up his previous best seller, Diary of a Fat Man.
This is a fundraiser for the Glendowie College Band, who will provide musical entertainment on the night. Other students will be performing a dramatic skit of the award-winning book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon as part of the program. Tickets $12.00 (includes glass of wine) contact Glendowie Music Department on 09–575 9128 ext.126.
But that’s not all! Julie also does freelance event coordination in the literary world, and Michael Palin and Max Cryer are will be appearing at upcoming events she is organising for the North Shore Libraries Foundation.
Next Monday the 18th, Max Cryer will be talking about his new book Hear our voices we entreat, his investigation into the history of National Anthem. The evening will include singing and musical entertainment from Carmel College Choir and Max himself. Book signings available! All proceeds to the North Shore Libraries Foundation. 6.30pm at Carmel College, Shakespeare Road, Takapuna, $10, door sales only.
Finally, for now, an evening with Michael Palin! Michael’s new book Himalaya will be the topic of discussion obviously, excellent timing with the great TV show on right now. That event’s on Wednesday 10th November, 7.30pm, Rosmini College Auditorium, 36 Dominion Street, Takapuna. Tickets $15.00 from Ticketek.
So there you are. Plenty to do, whilst having a good laugh, a glass of vino, and supporting your local schools and writers. And you can’t say fairer than that. If you want to contact Julie for a fundraising event for your school, by all means do so by email julie@literarylandscapes.co.nz, or on her mobile 021-377 342.
