Herald on Sunday launch in Oct

Sue ChetwinThe new Auckland Sunday newspaper, the Herald on Sunday, will launch on 3 October in a tabloid ‘compact’ format.

Editor Sue Chetwin (pictured) said the Herald on Sunday would have a main news and features section, a strong sports 'liftout', and two female-orientated magazines. These will be called Sunday Life and View.

Sunday Life will focus on people and lifestyle issues, with View concentrating on entertainment, television and the arts.

According to publisher APN, the decision to avoid the traditional broadsheet was driven by the international trend of large format, quality newspapers moving to a tabloid more convenient, user-friendly size.

A number of highly-respected overseas newspapers have converted to tabloid ‘compact’, including The Independent and The Times of London.

The new paper might be small, but we’re hoping there will be a substantial book section in there.

Well, Chris, I guess you're a wee bit cynical of this new newspaper (tabloid)! You're probably right though as the "women's interest" usually equates to celebrity gossip.

I'm actually looking forward to getting my mitts on the Sunday edition. I just think that avoiding the T-word in describing the paper's format is asking for ridicule. The latest Mediacom industry newsletter even reports that "Herald staff are forbidden to use that word (because of its downmarket implications)". Let's hope that it's just the page size that's 'downmarket', and not the content!
