Those busy literary bees at the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) at Victoria University are calling for submissions all over the place. Got a couple right here:
The fourth issue of Turbine, their online literary journal is imminent. Turbine is a showcase for work by all NZ writers (not just those associated with the IIML), and a quick and comparatively easy way to get your stuff out there offshore. It’s edited by Chris Price, poet and general uber all-rounder (co-ordinates Writers and Readers Week in Wellington; editor, publisher, MAs for Africa; her book, Husk, won the Montana Best First Book of Poetry in 2002 etc) so you’ll be in good hands.
Here’s what Bill Manhire has to say of his department’s baby:
Turbines do what the greatest works of art achieve: they seize the natural and make it into powerful energy. We hope the magazine will work like this and that it will soon be sending its energies right around the planet. I think established writers will one day look back on Turbine as the place where they got their start …
Catherine Chidgey, Jenny Bornholdt, Andrew Johnston, Paula Morris, Cliff Fell and Tusiata Avia all have been published in Turbine.
Submissions of poetry, creative non-fiction and short fiction need to be in by 21 October 2004. Photos or other images with literary themes? Whack ‘em in, you never know. Check the submission guidelines, or email turbine@vuw.ac.
There’s also applications invited for Victoria University Writer in Residence 2005. It's open to writers in all areas of literary and creative activity, including drama, fiction and poetry, New Zealand art, biography, history, film, theatre and new media.
Applicants should be ‘authors of proven merit’ normally resident in New Zealand, or New Zealanders currently resident overseas. The successful applicant will take up residence in the International Institute of Modern Letters from 1 February 2005 to 31 January 2006. No idea what the rooms are like …
For further information, www.jobs@vuw.ac.nz or contact the HR Officer, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on 04-463 5840 or email hss-appoint@vuw.ac.nz, quoting reference no. HS-435. Applications close 31 August 2004 so you'll have to get a wriggle on.
