Bravado, the biannual literary magazine from the Bay of Plenty, has created a couple of presentations for schools and colleges with English or Media students.
- Putting together a Community Arts Magazine explains the practical side of combining text and graphics to meet editorial guidelines and reader expectations, while staying within budget.
- Reading & Writing with Bravado reveals what the magazine looks for in contributions, from writers and from illustrators. Students will learn the qualities needed for good stories, poems, reports and opinions, and also get an insight into policy and practice in compiling content for a literary arts magazine.
Each presentation takes about 25 minutes – using an overhead projector or PowerPoint – and is followed by a Q&A session. Free handouts are available. The cost is $50, or $75 for both presentations (which don't need to be timetabled together, but can be.)
Two special editions of Bravado are already being planned that may be of interest. Bravado #4 (due in May 2005) is sponsored by Tourism BOP and will feature writing about the Bay &/or by Bay writers & illustrators. Bravado #5 will include a Schools insert of 'Young Writing' from secondary schools, colleges, polytechnics & universities.
