Here are the New Zealand fiction bestsellers for the two weeks ended 28 May:
1 Mansfield, C K Stead (Vintage), steady at number one;
2 Heart Of Coal, Jenny Pattrick (Black Swan), one up from 3rd place;
3 The Denniston Rose, Jenny Pattrick (Black Swan), one down from 2nd;
4 Degrees For Everyone, Bob Jones (Hazard Press), steady at 4th, and
5 The Whale Rider: Movie Tie In Edition, Witi Ihimaera (Reed Publishing), also maintaining its place at number five.
And the New Zealand non-fiction bestsellers for the same period are:
1 The Penguin History Of New Zealand, Michael King (Penguin Books), steady at one;
2 Jonah: My Story, Jonah Lomu & Warren Adler (Hodder Moa Beckett), steady at two;
3 Destructive Deluge, Caleb Hall (Westmount School), a newcomer to the listings;
4 Edmonds Cookery Book Revised Edition, (Hodder Moa Beckett), steady at four, and
5 Of Course I Love You... Now Go To Your Room, Diana Levy (Random House New Zealand), one up from its last listing at number 6.
And as it’s Storylines week, the children’s and teens listing:
1 Scorpia, Anthony Horowitz (Walker Books), a total newcomer;
2 The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time, Mark Haddon (Definitions) previously first;
3 Oh Hogwash, Sweet Pea!, Ngareta Gabel, Ali Tea & Astrid Jensen (Huia Publishers), also new;
4 Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, J K Rowling (Bloomsbury), up from number 6, and
5 The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, C S Lewis (HarperCollins), previously unlisted, interestingly, as the movie is in production here in West Auckland … so there you are.
Ted Dawe’s Thunder Road is still at number 8 despite its recent win. Wonder if parents are running shy of it’s controversial plot lines? T’would be a shame.
For international books in New Zealand, the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is still hanging in there in the fiction lists, and Rick Stein’s Food Heroes - Another Helping has come in from leftfield to be top of the non-fiction charts.
