Andris Apse, the photographer for the promotional imagery of The Lord of The Rings, has collated sixty of his Fiordland photographic images, taken over the last 30 years, into a three volume collectors' edition.
The book is a collaboration of writing by Apse, Andy Dennis and Keri Hulme. Andy Dennis is a conservationist and author and has worked with Apse on two previous publications. Keri Hulme, Booker Prize winner for The Bone People, shares Apse's passion for Fiordland. She has provided roughly 4500 words worth of traditional stories and discussion about the place where "wild weather and mists keep secrets safe".
Hulme says of Apse's photographs "[it is a] celebration of places still pretty well untouched. It's ancient, it's unfathomable by any one person and all you can do is look at the pictures and think, aaah."
The price could necessitate an expletive: $3000 for the three volume set, though each will be individually hand-bound and only a 1000 copy print run. It is due out in May/June and will be available through Andris Apse's web site.
