For some inexplicable reason, our most popular Off Topic recommendation has been the wooden Lomo Zero Pinhole camera that we featured in October 2003.
If you’re one of the hundreds of people who keep checking out that bizarre item, you’ll be interested to know that Lomo has just released a Deluxe version, five ounces heavier and slightly bigger. This one costs NZ$490 to deliver to your door, instead of $280.
What do you get for the extra $210? First up, wooden blinds inside the camera that can be used to vary the sizes of your prints. So you can now choose between (in centimetres) 6×4, 6×6, 6×7, or semi-panoramic 6×9 exposures.
The Zero Image Pinhole Deluxe's dual-travel shutter now accepts a standard cable release to ensure sharp, shake-free images. After mounting the camera on a tripod or resting it securely, a cable release will ensure that the camera is totally still during the Pinhole's two-second-or-so exposures.
A spirit level (right) in brass and light green glass now adorns the top of the Deluxe Pinhole. Since pinhole cameras render true architectural lines with no wide-angle distortion, this is indispensable in composing precisely straight landscape and architectural images. And finally, a brass plate displays the "Zero Image signature" and your camera's limited edition production number.
