doublevision.jpgDouble Vision is the latest novel from Pat Barker, author of the much-lauded World War I Regeneration trilogy. According to The Press, "it's a strong, flowing narrative underpinned by some very dark themes". However,

This deep, slowish novel would be more interesting for a tighter conclusion. Finishing as it does, it leaves a sense that the story is just a means for Barker to prod the reader's own ideas and understanding. Still, that's a value in itself, and Double Vision is certainly both readable and thought-provoking.

In Lord John and the Private Matter, Diana Gabaldon resurrects Lord John Grey, a significant character in her Jamie and Claire Fraser novels, but with mixed results:

Her characterisation of Lord John is much weaker than for the Frasers, and plot-lines are too cluttered for my liking. She is onto a great couple of characters in Jamie and Claire; she should stick to them until she is able to create equally engaging people on which to hang her historical detail.
