Breakfast revelation

pepino.jpgI have just been sitting outside this summery Sunday morning, reading the newspaper, drinking Lapsang Souchong, and eating pepino (Solanum muricatum, sometimes known as the 'tree melon'). And no, I'd never heard of pepino either. It's an egg-shaped subtropical fruit, yellow with purple stripes, that resembles a small melon. It tastes out of this world: sweet and aromatic, a cross between a cantaloupe and honey melon. Worth seeking out.
